Reimagining CAM: Taking a Breath to Build a Stronger Future

Beginning June 15, CAM Raleigh will temporarily pause exhibitions and in-house programming to reflect, reimagine, and redesign our future.

Like many small museums across the country, we’re navigating the realities of a rapidly changing world, where the cost of operating a physical space has increasingly outpaced traditional support, and funding from government agencies, foundations, and both corporate and individual donors has become more competitive than ever. These challenges have led us to ask critical questions about how CAM can remain sustainable for generations to come.

So, we’re taking a collective breath – not to step back, but to look forward. We’re exploring bold new ways to engage our audiences, fund our mission, and serve our community with greater impact.

What’s not changing? Our unwavering commitment. Our community-centric values. Our belief that art can transform, inspire, and build bridges. CAM’s North Star has always been clear: to inspire community through contemporary art — the art of our time. This includes not just visual art, but also dance, music, performance, and interdisciplinary experiences that reflect the world in which we live. Contemporary art helps us make sense of the present, imagine new futures, and connect more deeply with one another. This vision continues to guide everything we do, now and into the future.

We’re incredibly proud of the role our building at 409 West Martin Street has played in shaping the cultural fabric of Raleigh’s Warehouse District. Over the past 14 years, this space has held groundbreaking exhibitions, joyful celebrations, and conversations that have sparked change. To those who’ve laughed, cried, danced, learned, and dreamed within these walls – thank you. Your trust means everything to us.

But the story of CAM has never been just about a building; it’s about people. It’s about you.

As we press pause this summer, CAM will remain present in the community. We’ll continue to host offsite events and collaborate with partners throughout the Triangle. And we’re thrilled to welcome the return of the Raleigh Fine Arts Society’s annual NC Artists Exhibition this fall, opening September 28.

Art reminds us that change is not something to fear, but to embrace. We’re taking this moment to imagine what a contemporary art museum of the future could look like — one that is more nimble and even more connected to the creative energy of our city.

In the meantime, don’t miss your chance to experience two powerful and timely exhibitions before our doors temporarily close:

These exhibitions speak directly to this moment, reminding us that transformation, though sometimes disruptive, can lead to deeper meaning and connection.

With gratitude,

The CAM Board of Directors
