CAM/now Speed Dating – It Can Happen For You!
By Beth Eiserloh Johnson
We are so thrilled to be hosting the second annual CAM/now Speed Dating event on February’s First Friday! It was a great time last year and we were so pleased with the awesome excitement and turn-out we got from local young professionals looking to mingle. Last year’s event seemed to be a hit with all involved and we even had a few actual love matches. One couple in particular met during the event and are happily together still!
Both local creative professionals, Pete and Evette hit it off immediately and struck up a romance that turned into a great relationship. I decided to embarrass them a bit and see if they’d answer my Q&A about their experience and relationship and they were game! So thank you, Pete and Evette for going for it and signing up for Speed Dating last year and also for humoring us with this fun Q&A:
What was the first positive thing that you noticed about the other person during your speed-dating round?
Pete: Evette looked extremely beautiful but not my usual type. I was slightly intimidated at first but once I started talking to her I realized she was super cool, energetic and unique. Very quickly I felt a connection and completely at ease. The more we talked the more we seemed to have in common.
Evette: Handsome and incredibly confident. Immediately I was interested in finding out how his brain worked. His gorgeous eyes and attractive beard were very distracting… mmmm.
Do you recall what you talked about in your 7 minute speed-dating conversation?
Pete: I asked her what her hobbies were and what she was passionate about. She said she liked diverse music, weird art, good food and skateboarding. She talked about her creative career that she enjoyed. I thought it was too coincidental as I’m passionate about the same things and also have a creative career that I love. I was intrigued but it seemed almost too good to be true so I was optimistically skeptical. I needed to find out more.
Evette: He is the only person that has ever trumped me at coolest job. Then to go on to say he loved skating, snowboarding … did I mention the handsome face and beard? At one point I smacked the girl friend I came with and asked “have you met Pete?” I knew they spoke prior to me. As to say “holy s**t this guy is awesome!” I was overwhelmed.
What was your first date after the CAM speed-dating event?
Pete: For our first solo date I took her to a hockey game. We destroyed the other team 5 to 1 so it was a super fun time. There were fights, a little blood on the ice, and we got free queso after the 5th goal. We didn’t want the night to end so after the game we shot some pool, listened to music, then finished the evening with a few Dethklok episodes … laughing uncontrollably until the wee hours of the morning.
Evette: We went to a hurricane’s hockey game together. So fun and comfortable. The night was like being with a childhood best friend … they know your quintessential self. I still have my ticket stub from that night in my wallet. “Free queso!!!!!”
How does art (of any variety) play a role in what you like to do as a couple?
Pete: It factors into everything. We have very similar tastes in art, music and food so we love going to museums, concerts and new restaurants. We love exploring, eating and adventuring so living a creative life together is the most compatible and fun relationship I’ve ever had.
Evette: It plays a daily role. We seem to consistently be going to galleries, creating delicious meals, attending shows/concerts, hiking, critiquing, magical daily happenings.
What are you top 3 favorite qualities about the other person?
Pete: She is the most loving, passionate and caring person I have ever met. She is extremely driven and athletic. Most importantly she’s a genuinely happy person and loves living life to the fullest. I’m the luckiest guy on the planet to have her in my life.
Evette: Pete is incredibly generous, tender hearted, and the sweetest person. He is the love of my life and my best friend.
Do you have “a song” as a couple?
Pete: “I love your face” by Kali Briis. Amazing song but a million times better while watching the music video. We have a bunch more but that was one of our first.
Evette: Yes many! But I’m sensitive to keeping those for us. I hope you understand.
Describe each other with just 2 words:
Pete: Vivacious, Benevolent
Evette: Quietly Strong, Tender Heart
What is your favorite downtown Raleigh spot (for food/drinks/date night)?
Pete: Too many to list but a few in the Raleigh/Pittsboro/Carrboro area are: Oak Leaf, Kings, Pooles, Neptunes, Beasleys, Cat’s Cradle, Acme, Lantern, Captial Club, NCMA, Flanders and of course CAM. The most special evenings are reserved for chilling at either of our homes absorbing art, music, food and drink. Just being together and relaxing is the best, we can have fun anywhere.
Evette: Poole’s, Capital Club, Kings, Beasley’s, Fox Liquor, Oak Leaf, Neptunes, Raleigh Times, Acme, Glass Half Full, Cradle, 506, Lincoln, home is the best!
Do you have any advice for future CAM speed-daters?
Pete: Be yourself and hope the compatibility gods are smiling upon you.
Evette: Meet new friends and expect the best.
